چکیده
A study on the relationships of the contents of acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS), cholesterol, calcium and magnesium in Japanese aortas to the occurrence and severity of intimal disease was performed. A diminished yield of AMPS found with advancing atherosclerosis proved statistically significant. Comparatively, the AMPS content of Japanese aortas in the first six decades was less and the aortic cholesterol, calcium and the severity of atherosclerosis were delayed two to three decades in Japanese when compared with those in Americans.

Effect of dietary magnesium on development of atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits.
The effect of dietary magnesium (Mg) on the development of atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits was investigated. Male New Zealand White rabbits (n = 31) were placed on five kinds of diets: regular, 1% cholesterol, and 1% cholesterol diets supplemented with either 300, 600, or 900 mg (as Mg) of Mg sulfate. The regular and 1% cholesterol diets contained 400 mg of Mg per 100 g. Each rabbit ...

The most notable controversy concerns the earliest morphological alteration in atherogenesis. Some investigators hold that the accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides is the reaction to a primary deposition of lipid, while others hold t...
